A Simple Guide to Caring for Yourself and Others

It is very important to care for your body and mind every day. Although busy days, responsibilities, and work often force us to seek quick fixes to feel better in the short term, self-care is a journey; and learning to take time for yourself each day, to listen to your body's signals, and to understand your feelings will help you feel fulfilled and grounded while also giving you the energy to care for those around you.

Here are some of Bach's best tips to help you care for yourself and others every day:

1. Take Care of Yourself

The most important thing you can do to have the energy to take care of others is to make sure you take care of yourself first. If you feel exhausted, it will be even harder to be there for your friends and family. While the stress of work or daily life often forces us to work late or makes it difficult to switch off in the evenings, especially with so many of us working from home, overworking ourselves is not helpful and ultimately unproductive. It is more important than ever to make sure we take time to rest, take a break, or take a day off now and then.

2. Healthy Eating

Nutrition plays an important role in taking care of ourselves, and understanding how our bodies work and how food fuels us can have a big impact on how we feel every day, allowing us to go from sunrise to sunset without experiencing the dreaded afternoon slump. If you're having trouble figuring out what you need, try a food diary app for a day or two to get an idea of what you've been eating and what you might be missing. If you're struggling to get certain minerals or vitamins from your diet, you could also try a dietary supplement* (after consulting your doctor, of course). Preparing meals is also a great way to stay in control of your diet and can be a relaxing activity to do on a Sunday afternoon.

*A dietary supplement should not replace a balanced, varied diet and a healthy lifestyle.

3. Physical activity

It may seem obvious, but staying active is one of the most important things you can do to feel more energetic, motivated, and to take care of yourself, both physically and mentally. It speeds up your heart rate, increases oxygen in your blood, and releases endorphins, all of which contribute to increased energy. Exercise also stimulates the production of serotonin, known as the "happiness hormone." But sometimes, the obligation to exercise can cause stress and anxiety. That's why it's so important to find something you truly enjoy, so it doesn't feel like just another chore. If you can't find something you enjoy, challenge yourself to try something new each week for four weeks.

For example, the first week: yoga, the second week: tennis, the third week: jogging, the fourth week: Pilates. You can also do physical activity as a family on the weekend, for example, by going to the park to play ball games or playing tag with the children. The most important thing is to find something you enjoy, something that won't overwhelm you but will help you take care of yourself.

4. Quality time with your friends and family

If your days are busy, it can be easy to feel overwhelmed by various commitments, meaning we don't get to enjoy time with friends and family as much as we should. But having a support network is essential for your well-being and the well-being of others. Technology has allowed us to feel constantly connected to one another. But seeing someone's Facebook or Instagram updates isn't the same as being in a relationship with them. Regularly spending time with loved ones is important for many reasons: it's enjoyable, refreshing, and can help maintain happiness. But making up for lost time doesn't mean you have to sit and chat over a cup of coffee.

Why not make things more interesting by starting a book club with friends? Or set aside a few hours on the weekend to bake cookies with the kids? And why not try a new sport with a friend? If you don't have time to spend with your friends in person, you can also create a scrapbook to help you feel connected to those you love. Looking through old photos and memories can be a lot of fun. Favorite stories are retellings, and new ones emerge. It's a wonderful way to remember and get to know each other better.

5. Good sleep hygiene

Too often, when we settle down for the evening, we struggle to let go of the day's thoughts, constantly reviewing things that haven't been done and making mental notes about what needs to be accomplished tomorrow.

Many of us also tend to check our social media accounts on our phones or tablets throughout the evening, and the blue light emitted by these devices can keep our minds constantly alert. Many things can affect our sleep patterns, but there are a few things you can do to ensure you get the recommended seven hours of sleep per night. A good starting point is establishing a restful evening routine that allows you to unwind so you can completely switch off. Here's a quick evening routine checklist to help you sleep better:

  • Turn off electronic devices an hour before bedtime
  • Practice meditation
  • Spend 5 minutes journaling
  • Write down one thing you are grateful for
  • Stay hydrated
  • Create a relaxing bedroom environment
  • Read a book
  • Do your skincare routine
  • Listen to calming music
  • Try the original RESCUE Remedy blend, with added White Chestnut essence and allow yourself a natural night's sleep so you awake refreshed.

6. Try Something New

While the feeling of being exhausted often arises when we try to do too much, it's often because we're doing too much of the same thing and end up feeling stuck. Try making your days exciting and varied by introducing something new into your daily routine each week. Whether it's taking a walk down a different street, trying yoga for the first time, or buying a different type of vegetable at the store, push yourself to think of one new thing, big or small, that you can do each day. Hold yourself accountable, keep a journal, track your moods, and write down every new thing you try.
